I got a Giant integrated tapered (1 1/8"-1 1/2") headset from the LBS which also had the straight steerer crown race adaptor in it. Fitted the headset and the adaptor crown race to the fork and works perfect. Non-taper is a straight steerer tube (the thing that connects the bike frame to the forks. Comes in either 1-1/8 inch and 1.5 inch (rare from what I have seen.) Taper will start at 1.5 at the bottom and 1-1/8 at the top. The taper gives much more rigidity for a minimal weight increase. There are several major differences between "steep taper" toolholders, like NMTB, CAT & BT and HSK. Taper: NMTB, BT and CAT-V holders typically use a 7:24 taper while HSK uses a shallow 1:10 taper. It is possible to fit the tapered steerer to an older frame that started out with a straight 1-1/8" steerer but the headtube diameter must be 44mm which, as shiggy points out, is not the case on the '06 Specialized. I pretty sure they were designed for problem free operation as 99% of threaded barrels out there are not tapered.
